ELMIRA--The Chemung River was extra safe Monday night.
The Elmira and West Elmira Fire Departments were practicing river safety and water rescues. They want people to know the river is fun, but can be dangerous.
Plenty of people came out to watch the river rescue demos. Friends of the Chemung River teamed up with the local F.D.'s to get the word out about river safety. They say this time of year can be especially important to warn people about the dangers of the river, because so many people are out on the water.
On the surface, the Chemung River looks calm, safe, and serene. And on most days it is, if you use your head. But the currents on the Chemung River are strong and in some areas the water is more than 10 feet deep.
Jim Pfiffer, Director of the Friends of the Chemung River Watershed, says the river has seen a 10-fold increase in use over the last couple of years. And that ups the odds someone could get hurt, or even drown.
West Elmira Fire Chief Jack LaValley says the department has already had two river rescues this year. His advice? If you're a water sports novice, don't venture out on the river without some common sense. He says have proper flotation devices, watch the currents, and always let someone know where your going. Also, The fire department says do not swim in the Chemung River.
