BINGHAMTON -- Air Force Major David Graham wanted to be a pilot since was a kid growing up in Horseheads. He started flying gliders when he was just 14-years-old.
“I’ve always been interested in military aviation, and some of my mentors at Harris Hill in Big Flats were ex-Air Force guys,” said Graham.
This weekend, Maj. Graham is back in the Southern Tier, performing for the first time at the Greater Binghamton Air Show.
“With the schedule in the air force, we're pretty busy. So I don't get back home pretty much. And when I can do it in a work capacity, it's pretty cool,” said Graham.
Binghamton is one of about 60 air shows Graham will perform in around the world over the next two years. Graham says it's the best job in the Air Force.
“I grew up being that kid -- going to air shows. So that's what's neat for me. It's like coming around full circle when I go to these shows and talk to the kids,” he said.
Graham and his crew performed a full dress rehearsal Friday.
“It’s like the ultimate freedom,” Graham explained. “In the demonstration, I'll fly from 115 mph to just below the speed of sound right in front of the crowd. You'll see me transition from as low as 200 ft. o 15,000 ft. in a matter of seconds. The whole time, I'll be doing loops and rolls I might actually use in combat."
“It’s kind of special -- 4th of July in my hometown,” said Graham.
Gates open Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. at the Greater Binghamton Airport.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for kids up to 16-years-old.
