Pink Boutique Brings Comfort After Cancer Surgery

As breast cancer awareness month winds down, so do the events in support of it.

But there is one place in Elmira where breast cancer is always the top priority, even long after this month is over.

The Pink Boutique opened up last October in the YWCA on Lake Street.

The shop carries special bathing suits, bras, head wraps, hats and even breast prosthesis for women who've undergone a mastectomy.

Jan Stillman is an RN and a certified fitter of mastectomy products.

“They [breast prosthesis] are light weight and very realistic,” Stillman said. “They slide into the pockets of the bras, the bathing suits, the lingerie, they all have the pockets in them.”

The fitting room at The Pink Boutique is where Jan says she'll spend hours making sure her client is fitted properly.

“When they walk out of here, they are a different person, they have part of them back again,” she said. “They look different, they feel different, they look sexy and beautiful, like a woman.”

The Pink Boutique also has information on no cost mammograms and clinical breast screenings for low-income and under-insured people.

The shop is open during the YWCA’s regular business hours.
