ELMIRA - The Arctic League, Chemung County's oldest charity, opened its 2009 Christmas season in Elmira today – literally.
Its 9-year-old "Bell Ringer" Curt Gustafson opened and signed the Big Book and gave his donation to Tom Hesselson, President of the Arctic League Board of Directors.
The charity will donate gifts to about 4,000 needy children on Christmas morning, but to keep it going next year, will need $115,000.
The charity has been running since 1912.
100% of the money donated is used to purchase gifts for children. The Arctic League Board of Directors covers all overhead costs associated with the charity.
All donors become "members" of the Arctic League and "auxiliary" Big Book locations are open now to accept donations.
