HORSEHEADS-- More than 85 million Americans lack dental coverage, almost twice the number of those who don't have health coverage. And a recent Kaiser Family Foundation report found just 44 percent of employers who offer health benefits also offer dental insurance.
Scientific studies suggest oral health may be linked to heart disease and stroke, but a few simple guidelines can prevent more serious illnesses.
National drugstore chain Rite Aid joined the American Dental Association for a two-month campaign to raise awareness for oral hygiene. Stores nationwide are giving out free educational guides with basic information about minor oral infections, dental care for children and even when to replace a toothbrush. Stores are also offering expert advice from pharmacists.
“In these tough times, sometimes we're getting more and more questions from people that may find it difficult or can't afford to go to a health care provider,” said Mark Corwin, a Rite Aid pharmacist in Horseheads.
“People will see us much more than they will see possibly their doctor or their dentist,” said Corwin.
The ADA still recommends regular visits to a dentist for good oral health and proper treatment.
