HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Northeastern Pennsylvania is getting a new area code: 272. The state Public Utility Commission announced Friday that the new designation will be used after available phone numbers in the 570 area code have been exhausted. The region is expected to run out of 570 numbers during 2011. When that happens, phone users will be assigned numbers with the 272 code, even though they live in the same region. Callers will have to dial all 10 digits of a local number - instead of the current seven - when the 272 area code is implemented. The number 272 was assigned by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator. The agency is the neutral third-party area code relief planner for Pennsylvania. |
