Back to school shopping is in full swing and now, thanks to a philanthropists gift, needy kids in New York State can get $200 for help with supplies. Tuesday, Governor David Paterson announced the plan to give the grants to each of more than 800,000 needy kids whose family is receiving social services or food stamps. The $35 million donation allows the state to tap into $140 million in federal stimulus money. Some Republicans are criticizing the Governor's move. Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos says the funding should be used to create jobs or reduce taxes. And Senator George Wwinner says the plan lacks oversight to prevent abuse and fraud.
