After months of dry weather, thousands lose power as severe thunderstorms rage across the Southern Tier.

Storms Hit the Southern Tier
SOUTHERN TIER (WENY) -- Around 6:00pm Thursday night, thunderstorms swept across the Southern Tier, though damage was relatively minimal.

At the intersection of Gardiner and Westinghouse Roads in Horseheads, the severe weather knocked out power to the street lights. Village Plaza also lost power, and off Chambers Road, power lines were down.

Rain, high winds, thunder, lightening and even hail hit the area.

As of 9:30pm Thurday night, more than 7,000 NYSEG customers were without power. But a little more than an hour later, that number was reduced to 1,600.
