HORSEHEADS (WENY) – A 14 year-old Horseheads girl spelled two words – “materialize” and “nereid” – correctly to advance to the semi-finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Sruti Akula, an 8th grader at The Alternative School for Math & Science in Corning, is one of 50 spellers moving on in the competition after Wednesday's preliminary round.

Sruti says she did very well on the written test and had no difficulty with spelling “materialize” and “nereid” on stage.

Thursday the competition expands to the entire Merriam-Webster dictionary. Sruti says she'll be doing some light studying heading into the semi's.

You can watch Sruti Thursday at 10:00am on ESPN2 in the Spelling Bee semi-finals.
