Local Firefighter Receives Award

Local Firefighter Awarded

ODESSA (WENY) -- A Schuyler County man was honored Thursday night for his outstanding service to the Odessa Volunteer Fire Department.

The Award was given by the Central New York Fireman's Association.

Churches -- an army veteran -- grew up idolizing his father, who was also a firefighter.

In more than 40 years of service, he's had some close calls and makes firefighter training a top priority.

He says brining in the next generation of volunteer firefighters is vital for the community he serves and others in the Twin Tiers.

"Fire service is alive and well and the volunteer fire service will be going on for a long time to come, but we need people that are going to carry on and to carry on the good traditions and the good work that has been done," says Churches.

Churches was nominated by other firefighters at the department.
