Man Critically Injured in I-86 Crash
BIG FLATS (WENY) – A Steuben County man was sent to a Rochester hospital Friday night, suffering severe injuries from a crash on I-86.
The three-car accident happened in the westbound between Big Flats and Corning around 7:00pm Friday night.
New York state police say two cars were approaching the construction zone near exit 49, right before the merge to a single lane. As both cars slowed down, a third car slammed into the behind of one of the vehicles.
The driver of the rear-ended car -- a 69 year-old man from the Town of Bradford -- was sent to Arnot Ogden Medical Center. He was later air lifted to a Rochester with severe internal injuries. Troopers are not releasing his name at this time.
No one else was injured in the crash. The wreck forced troopers to close the highway for about a half an hour, forcing a traffic back-up about five miles long.
The driver who rear-ended the Bradford man was issued a ticket for following too closely.
Troopers did acknowledge the single-lane merge into the construction zone was a factor in the accident.
