Elmira-Corning Regional Airport Runway Expansion
BIG FLATS (WENY) -- Bigger planes are ready to take flight at the Elmira Corning Regional Airport. State and local officials cut the ribbon to unofficially open the new 400 foot runway extension today. Planes will be able to start using the runway on Thursday. The $9.8 million project is funded mostly by a US Department of Transportation grant. With the runway extended to 8- thousand feet, larger aircraft can land at the airport which opens the door to new opportunities.
Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli says, "We have an airport, there are none like this in the region with a new runway; right on an interstate"
The Elmira Corning Regional Airport's Director of Aviation is excited about the new opportunities the extended runway could bring "...that could mean bigger aircraft, could be more air lines, could be different destinations, so just a variety of improvements we could look forward to from this point on".
Other additions with the runway extension include an extended taxiway, new lights, and a system of crushable concrete blocks designed to stop a plane if it were to overrun the runway.
