Avoca Court Clerk Accused of Stealing Funds
AVOCA, NY (WENY) -- A former clerk in Steuben County is accused of using village money for her own benefit.
Forty-one year old Shawn Wellington is charged with Falsifying Business Records, Official Misconduct and Petit Larceny.
Wellington was the court clerk for the Village of Avoca. According to the Steuben County Sheriff's Office, Wellington stole money from the court bank account to pay a traffic ticket. However, the money used in the transaction was deleted from the court database, to cover up the missing cash.
The theft was discovered after the State Office Court of Administration noticed some irregularities in the database, and the Comptroller's office conducted a court audit.
Wellington turned herself in to the Sheriff's Office, arraigned and released on her own recognizance.
