Band Teacher Retires After 34 Years
June 5, 2012
WAVERLY (WENY) -- For more than 30 years, one man has served as band director at Waverly High School. But on Tuesday night, he directed his last spring concert.
James Hillman is retiring this fall. More than 70 alumni band members surprised him Tuesday night to play the Waverly High School fight song at the end of the show. Many of them now have kids in the program or were inspired to go into musical education themselves. They say it's hard to imagine a program without Hillman, but know he's left a terrific legacy.
"To watch the program grow over the years has just been phenomenal to watch," says Band Booster President, Pam Beard. "I'm proud to say all three of my children have been a part of the program."
"My father is a professional musician, so I've got lots of appreciation for music" says Jude Kane, a bass trumpet player and former band president. "But Mr. Hillman taught me to appreciate it on another level."
