ECSD Voters Come Out
The question is; will voters accept a 2.6 percent tax hike after defeating a five percent increase in May?
Elmira (WENY) - Elmira taxpayers come out for a second time to vote on the
Elmira City School budget. The question is; will voters accept a 2.6 percent
tax hike after defeating a five percent increase in May? A steady flow of
voters came out to the polls this afternoon to decide the fate of Elmira
schools. They'll decide whether to accept a $114 Million budget that raises
taxes 2.6 percent. Despite the tax increase, this budget cuts spending and
more than 120 teaching jobs. The budget proposal in May needed a 60 percent
super majority of yes votes, because it raised taxes 5 percent. That budget
failed. If this budget fails, the district will be forced to go with a
contingency budget which means more cuts.
