Elmira Facilities Update

May 16, 2012

Elmira (WENY) - After weeks of discussion the Elmira City School District board members accepted the recommendation from the facilities committee and their reorganization plan for city schools. Secondary schools will look like this. Broadway will now house grades 7 through 9 from the Southside, and Elmira Free Academy will also hold grades 7 through 9 from the Northside. Southside High School will be grades 10-12 for the whole district. Elementary schools will be paired together, Diven will house Pre-k through 2nd grade and those students will go to Hendy for 3rd through 6th grade. Other pairs will follow similar grade separation. Fassett will be with Beecher, Riverside with Coburn and Pine City with Broadway. Superintendent Joe Hochreiter says these pairings are what the committee found to be the best scenario for students.

What we said tonight and what we said in our committee recommendation is that we believe that these pairings will provide the best opportunities than the other pairings. There is no guarantee that student achievement will increase, if we did nothing and left the schools how they are there is no guarantee that student achievement will increase in that model either.

Over the next several months the district will start preparing teacher students and parents for the changes ahead.
