Southern Tier (WENY) - Southern tier property owners could be forced to pay more for flood insurance, but a new bill will save people more money than expected. As of now, Government flood plain maps don't recognizes local Levees, which would force Southern Tier property owners to buy flood insurance for the first time, but the United states Senate and House passed reforms to the National Flood Insurance Program on Friday, which would offer some help. Chemung County Deputy Executive Mike Krusen says FEMA will now give "Partial Credit" for existing Levees, as opposed to No credit, and any increase to existing flood insurance would be phased in.
“Partial certification means that some individuals under the current configuration of FEMA not recognizing levees at all will be given some relief from flood insurance.”
The president is expect to sign the Act into law.
