Fill the Bus Campaign Kicks Into Gear
ELMIRA (WENY)---Wegman's 5th annual "Fill the Bus" campaign kicked into high gear this morning.
They're looking for your help to fill school bus seats with -- no, not children -- but food supplies. Yellow busses are parked in front of Wegmans in Corning, Elmira, Hornell and Ithaca until Friday, September 21st.
The program sends about 1,500 needy kids home with a bag full of of meals every Friday during the school year. Last year the Elmira Wegmans donated 15,000 pounds of food.
"We are able to support the food banks and our customers making the donations, make sure that kids do have something to take home on the weekend, that's easy to prepare, healthy and nutritious," said Elmira Wegmans Manager, Steven Gilbert.
Missy Goetschius from The Food Bank of the Southern Tier says, "It helps the teachers focus on what they need to be focusing on, which is teaching the students versus addressing the issue of hunger that children are faced with. "
Shoppers who want to help the Food Bank's BackPack program can find a wish list inside all the local Wegman's stores.
100% of the donations stay in the Southern Tier.
