HORSEHEADS (WENY) --  This is National Police Week, and Horseheads and Elmira Heights leaders held their own ceremony to honor the local brave men and women who put their lives on the line everyday.

The Kuwanis Club officially recognized officers with the Horseheads and Elmira Heights Police Departements Tuesday night at Tanino's restaurant.

National Police Week runs May 13-19, and the goal is to remember and honor officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, and their family members who are left behind.

"<We want> to thank all those who are work in a very dangerous and stressful position to make us safe," says Village Mayor, Don Zeigler.  "They are what creates the safety in our community."

"I enjoy making a difference and hopefully making it a better place for my kids and hopefully the community in general," says Elmira Heights Police Chief Rick Churches.
