Bedbugs at Horseheads Motel 6

HORSEHEADS, NY (WENY) -- The Chemung County Health Department shut down almost a dozen rooms at a Horseheads hotel because of a bedbug infestation.
The county has been getting complaints about bedbugs at the Motel 6 off Interstate 86 for over a year. Health inspectors found evidence of the bugs in 11 rooms earlier this month. Those rooms need to be professionally treated and re-inspected before they can open.
"Once the problem is identified and the paying public lets them know, they need to be aggressive in their efforts to take care of the problem. We don't want to see them put their head in the sand and pretend it's going to go away in a couple days because it won't," said Tom Kump, Environmental Health Director at the Chemung County Health Department.
We called the motel's General Manager today, who tells us she shut down those 11 rooms prior to the health inspection and had them treated by Terminex, but weren't ready to reopen when the health inspector came. She also told us an inspector came back today and cleared three rooms to open, and expects more rooms to get the green light on Monday.
