Big Flats (WENY) - Big Flats Firefighters were at Target today not to battle a blaze, but to help raise awareness about fire safety. They came out as a part of the "29th Annual National Night Out", sponsored by Target and the National Association of Town Watch. The firefighters handed out goodie bags filled with firefighter themed toys and pamphlets, and of course kids got their own firefighters helmet. Lt. Laurie Lathrope from the Big Flats Fire Department says the goal is to help promote fire safety and readiness.
“It's very important every year to continually renew in everybody minds how important fire prevention is and the things you can learn about your exit drill in the home and the stop drop and roll. Keep it refreshed in the children mind and the parents minds so they can always plan their escape route and their safe meeting place,” says Lathrop.
This year's National Night Out was supposed to be a week earlier but was postponed because of the Chemung County Fair.
