Phone Scam in Troy

Scam Phone Calls in Troy
Troy (WENY) -- Imagine the phone ringing nonstop all day, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A number of Troy Pennsylvania businesses have been getting calls every 15 seconds, totalling over 200 a day.

For the past 10 days, they pick up the phone and get a recorded a message in French. They'll hang up, and seconds later, it calls back.

"It's very aggravating to answer the phone," said Linda Lawrence, a Customer Service Representative at MS Insurance. "You don't dare not answer the phone because it could very well be a customer."

"You can't concentrate," added Carol Kelly, Manager at Carson's Consumer Discount. "There aren't computers here, so the loans are done very lengthily with an HP 12, and it takes a lot of concentration and your thoughts. You just have to stop every few seconds to get the phone."

Business owners have complained to the local police who traced the calls to a hijacked Florida number, and the phone company says it can't block the calls.

"I contacted the F.C.C. to put a complaint in," said Tom Close, Partner at MC Insurance. "I don't know where it goes from here."
