NASCAR Legend Helps Food Bank
WATKINS GLEN (WENY) -- A NASCAR legend came to Schuyler County to help make the largest meat donation ever to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.
Smithfield meats presented the 30,000 pound pork donation at Tops in Watkins Glen. Richard Petty was on hand to help pass the ham. "The King" comes from humble beginnings and says he appreciates everything racing has brought him.
"We lived on a dirt road, no running water, no electricity, none of that. And I grew up and went all over the country and seen all kinds of different things. This makes you want to appreciate what you really got," Petty explains.
Food Bank officials say this is the largest protein donation they've ever received.
The pork donation is a nice addition to the menu for the 11,000 people the Food Bank of the Southern Tier serves each week.
