Salvation Army Backpack Distribution
Corning (WENY) --The Salvation Army handed out more than 300 backpacks Thursday in Corning to families in need.
The annual event distributes backpacks filled with school supplies to anyone who provides proof of income, address and school enrollment for their child. The Salvation Army purchased the backpacks, and with the help of Walmart and people's donations, they filled them with notebooks, pens and folders.
"We understand that there are many families in this community that just don't have the extra income to take care of this seasonal need," said Captain Kim Merchant of the Salvation Army. "So we tried to meet the need of the community by supplying backpacks and supplies to get them started with their initial first few months of school."
"I'm on a fixed income, and kids just keep getting more expensive every year," said parent Kristy Snyder. "So it's just nice to have programs like this to help people."
If you missed the event and are in need of a backpack, please call the Salvation Amy at 607-962-4681 to see if there are any more available.
