Salvation Army Drive at Walmart

Corning (WENY) -- The Salvation Army will be holding a backpack drive at the Walmart in Gang Mills to benefit local children tomorrow. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., they're having a backpack school supply drive to aid with back to school expenses. They're looking to fill at least 350 back packs with people's donations of pens, pencils, notebooks and folders.

Monetary donations will also be accepted by going up to the red Salvation Army van parked outside of the store.

"It's very important," said Salvation Army Captain John Merchant. "Everybody knows right now the economy is pretty tough, and even the middle class has been hit really hard this year. We see a lot of increases in all kinds of social service help going from food to clothing, rent and utilities."

If you can't make it out to Walmart tomorrow, the Salvation Army accepts donations at their Corning location at 32 Denison Parkway. The backpacks will be distributed on September 2nd.
