Elmira (WENY) - Verizon workers haven't had a contract for over a year, and today they protested at Wisner market with signs that said "Very greedy". Right now more than 45,000 Verizon workers are still working under last year's contract. A year ago, Union employees went back to work after a short strike based on the promise of continued negotiators which workers say have stalled. Protester Anthony Brannen says the company is trying to cut benefits and job security.
“We're not only fighting for our jobs but we're fighting for the retirees. The contract Verizon is offering would strip the retirees of benefits that they've worked for which ultimately would force them back into the work force.”
Unionized field worker reps and Verizon are in talks right now. Workers are threatening to strike if a new contract isn't reached by tomorrow.
