Watkins Glen (WENY) - Race week is here and Watkins Glen International is gearing up for the big NASCAR race on Sunday, but the village is seeing more early traffic than years past, and business owners couldn't be happier. A different kind of race is going on right now, a race for camping spots. This year there have been more advance camping reservations then ever before.
“We're still taking in campers that's why we started this morning at 6 o'clock this morning,” Says WGI President Mike Printup.
“It takes two or three days to load in all the campers its a lot of fun and for us it gives us positive feedback of the popularity of the sport.”
Alicia Gordon and her family have been camping at Watkins Glen for the past four years. She was surprised when she showed up early today it was so packed.
“I noticed people coming in a day early because this part doesn’t even open until Wednesday or today and people were here last night and a lot of people were here last night which surprised me.”
But the crowd doesn't bother her.
“It's just fun its nice its open you get to talk to people other people that enjoy the same sport you do its just a great time,”” says Gordon.
The crowds aren't bothering business owners either. Paul Marcellus owns the Colonial Inn and just opened a new creamery.
“It seems like the crowd is arriving sooner and happy people walking all around town. Walmart was inundated already with shoppers and I was there early today it was amazing.”
Getting up to the track early does have its benefits.
“The drivers are great love hanging with them but seeing the families coming out hear and their reaction. I was just down at the campground talking to families and talking to some of the fans out their and they love it and its really neat to be around them,” says Printup.
