Working In The Heat
Horseheads (WENY) -- The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an air quality alert in effect until 11 p.m.

The higher the air quality index, the greater the health concern because it correlates with ozone pollutants in the atmosphere.

Today's alert is considered "unhealthy for sensitive groups," like the elderly and very young children, but everyone is advised to be careful and limit their time out in the heat.

Some people, like construction workers, have no choice but to be outside all day long.

"You know, you just got to make sure you bring plenty of fluids with you and you don't overdo it," said Rory Eichner, a local traffic signal technician. "If you start feeling sick, slow down. There's only so much you can do when you get a heat advisory."

The air quality alert is in effect in Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins and Tioga counties.
