New York---[WENY]---Senator Schumer is reintroducing a bill to stop cell phone thieves dead in their tracks.The law would make it a federal crime to tamper with a phone's unique identification number.
It carries a penalty of five years in prison. It's the number allowing carriers to permanently disable stolen phones. According to the FCC, almost 40-percent of thefts involve cell phones. Cell phone crimes make up 14% of all crimes in New York.
