SOUTHERN TIER (WENY) -- According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, over 138,000 pounds of unwanted chemicals were collected from the Finger Lakes region in October.
It's all a part of the state's CleanSweepNY Program to dispose of unwanted pesticides or potentially harmful chemicals. They were collected from over 200 businesses, municipalities and schools in eleven counties.
The program began in 2002. The DEC says since then they have collected and disposed of 1.2 million pounds of hazardous chemicals, 800 pounds of elemental mercury and about 4,000 plastic pesticide containers.
