Today marks the 11th Annual March Out Hunger food raiser in Elmira.

While the rain may have stopped the actual march, it couldn't put a damper on on the spirit of the event.

Local people, groups and businesses pitched in to donate and collect thousands of pounds of food and non-perishables to help people who are less fortunate.

Scores of area residents who may be struggling to put food on the table won't have to worry about where their next meal comes from.

Tops employess and customers, along with other area organizations came through again.

Most of the food will go to the 70-plus families a day who count on Catholic Charities' Samaritan Center.

Some of the food also goes to Meals on Wheels' "Blizzard Bags" program for homebound Seniors during emergencies.

Lindsay Winters of Catholic Charities say, "This year raised 15,000 items of food for Meals on Wheels and The Samaritan Center, so it'll have a huge impact."

Executive Director of Meals on Wheels for Chemung County said, "Tops was a wonderful sponsor. They contributed over 10,000 items to the over 15,000 items collected and all of the schools in the Elmira school district and Boce's helped."

You can still donate at Tops market in Elmira, any Elmira Chemung Canal Trust office, or any Elmira City School.
