2012 Apple Crops
One local grower says he is still expecting a good apple crop this fall, despite some mixed reports about this year's crop nationwide.
WATKINS GLEN (WENY) --For apple farms in New York, the weather has made things very difficult, but some crops are ready for picking now. Apple picking started extra early at 'Resingers Apple Country' in Watkins Glen
The warm spring, followed by the snow, and then hot, dry summer created a dangerous combination for apple growing. The farm's owner says he had to open his apple picking business early because the bloom came early.
"I'd say we're two weeks early at least," says Rick Reisinger. "In 2010 we were similar. The earlier we start, the earlier we finish. And once the fruit starts to ripen we have to go."
The U.S. Department of Agriculture expects apple crops totals to be down more than 50 percent this year compared to the five-year state average.
