Ithaca (WENY) - Two Law experts debated the meaning of the second amendment at Cornell university's Law School tonight. Both experts had similar view points on our nations 2nd amendment, but discussed how things have changed over the decades. One expert made his case, saying the original idea was to arm Americans so they would be ready to form a militia if called to do so. The expert says things have changed since the 18th century. Cornell Law Professor Michael Dorf says Recently rulings by the US supreme court on gun control issues have allowed states like New York to pass laws like the SAFE Act.
“It limits the ability of the federal congress and the state legislature to enact gun control laws but the supreme court has left plenty of room to allow legislatures to enact common sense restrictions on guns of the sort being debated in Washington,” says Dorf.
