A Look Inside the Food Bank
September 28, 2013
ELMIRA -- (WENY) "This our facility at 388 Upper Oakwood Avenue. It's an exciting operation. And I'm excited to show you all what it looks like," said Natasha Thompson,
Food Bank of the Southern Tier President and CEO as she takes us on a tour of the Food Bank.
"Ok, so this is our warehouse we have three separate rooms where we store food."
The 16,000 square foot facility distrutes almost eight million pounds of food each year.
Which they then send to over 165 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters in six counties.
"They're available to our member agencies for 24/7 through our online ordering system and
then those orders are picked and staged and then delievered on our trucks directly to the member organizations we work with."
Their mobile food pantry brings the donated food directly to people's doorstep, making it easier for people to get the food they need.
"One of the things we had to build in this building was a freezer. It allows us to accept large donations of frozen vegetables frozen meals that kind of thing," said Natasha.
They have three coolers set at different temperatures that store fresh fruit, vegetables and dairy products.
Making sure those they donate too get well rounded and healthy foods.
Next up the production room...where all the food goes before heading out to the pantries.
And the tour ended right here..in the volunteer lounge...
Where Natasha says without them they wouldn't be the Food Bank. we could never accept the amount of food that we do or work that we do without the amount of volunteers we have backing us up.
