New York (WENY) - A disturbing Associated Press investigative report is showing the Untied States military's Chaotic handling of sexual assault cases. In a press release from the office of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand one case even showed how commanders have overruled recommendations for prosecution and dropped the charges instead.
The records were obtained by the associated press through the freedom of information act. One record shows NCIS case summaries described investigations that appeared to indicate a sex crime but were made into a lesser charge or dropped with no explanation. Senator Gillibrand has made military sexual assault a priority in recent months. A justice improvement act has bipartisan support and is expected to be voted on this week.
