Caregivers Ask for Support
August 21, 2013
ELMIRA -- (WENY) Congressman Tom Reed was in Elmira today to join in on a conversation with AARP about issues caregivers are facing.
Many of them are struggling to juggle responsibilities while looking after an elderly loved one. The support they provide is estimated at 32 billion dollars.
Here in Chemung County, over 16% of residents are senior citizens. In a survey from today's meeting, over 60% of seniors said they're worried about staying in their homes as they get older.
"We're all going to need it somewhere along the line. And is there just medical needs or are there social needs? Where's the funding going to come from? Where's the supply of caregivers?," wondered AARP Elmira President, Nancy Rehner.
Now, they're looking to brainstorm about how they can be better supported by public policies.
"I think the recognition that we have to deal with these issues, and from my perspective, to make sure we're dealing with them in a long term strategic way is important," says Congressman Reed. He applauded AARP's efforts to make the topic a priority.
Today's meeting was one of nine taking place throughout New York.
