Cayuga Deer Sterilization Phase Complete

CAYUGA HEIGHTS, NY (WENY) -- The village of Cayuga Heights is finished with its first effort to sterilize the deer population, after years of legal challenges and controversy over a proposed culling program.
Village leaders hired a company which sterilized 137 doe over a two week period last month. According to a report on the village's website, five does died during that time. Two died during trapping accidents in the trapping process, two passed away from prior conditions, and one died after the sterilization process.
At this point, more than 90% of the village's female deer population have been sterilized. The plan was adopted after a number of property owners refused to allow deer culling to happen on their land.
