Changes to ECSD Schedule

ELMIRA -- (WENY) Come September things will be a little different for some students in the Elmira City School District.
Students at Diven, Fassett, Pine City and Riverside Elementary Schools will start their days at 8:30 a.m. and get done at 3:00 p.m. Older students at Beecher, Broadway, Coburn and Hendy elementary schools will go in 8:10 a.m. and dismiss at 2:40 p.m.
The district made these changes so parents with kids in different grade levels would have time to pick them up when up when the bell rings.
"I know a lot of people who have their older children take care of their younger ones," says Lisa Ackerson, an employee at Of Hope Daycare.
The thing that's ruffling feathers with some parents are early release days on Wednesdays, while teachers do the learning after school.
Students at Diven, Fassett, Pine City and Riverside Elementary Schools will dismiss at 1:35 p.m. While older students grades 3 to 6 at Beecher, Broadway, Coburn and Hendy Elementary Schools will dismiss at 1:15 p.m.
"Now we really have to scramble and try to find something," says parent Lucretia Hoffman.
She has three kids at three different levels-- high school, middle school and elementary school.
"With Wednesdays we rely on our oldest, they were getting out earlier so the little ones get out later in the day he's already there ready and he watches them until we come home like 5/5:30," says Hoffman.
But there are resources out there for parents, like after school programs.
"We do pick up from all the local schools and head starts and pre-k's and stuff like that," says Tanisha Logan-Lattimore, the Director at Of Hope Daycare. "And we do have openings for after school programs right now."
The YWCA also provides before and after school programs for students called Kids World.
