Church Street Still Under Construction

ELMIRA (WENY) -- It's been a long road in downtown Elmira on Church Street for months now. The road project that's been causing delays and detours was supposed to wrap up by now.
The project started in the Spring, and today drivers are still dealing with one ways and closed off side street entrances.
Elmira Mayor Sue Skidmore says it'll be done by the end of next week.
The project was originally supposed to be done in September-- boasting new roads, sidewalks and lighting. However, back in August, the Department of Public works -- citing unforseen circumstances -- said it wouldn't be done until mid to late October. On this last day of October, and parts of Church and other Streets are still closed.
Lanes were supposed to be painted today, but the rain but a stop to that plan. It's looking like another rainy day tomorrow, but Mayor Skidmore remains hopeful and says the finished product will offer a fresh new look to the city.
"Oh my gosh, we are so close, I can see the lines in the street right now," joked Mayor Skidmore. "Even though it's the last day of the month, we promised it would be the end of the month-- we are so close. Within the next week we will be open and running normally and it'll be so nice."
Finishing touches include parking meters and road signs which be installed once traffic resumes.
