Confirmed: Two Shot in Elmira
ELMIRA -- [WENY] Police have confirmed two people were shot in a home on the 400 block of West 2nd Street in Elmira. They do not have any life threatening injuries.
Authorities believe a bullet was shot into a gas pipe and NYSEG was on the scene. The area still smells like gas. Earlier, NYSEG dug into the sidewalk to turn off the gas valve and were being shielded by the SWAT team.
Elmira Fire Chief says they were on hand in case of a fire explosion.
Neighbors are concerned and some are even thinking of moving out of the area. "It's not that I feel unsafe it's just an inconvenience to wake up and be told to go back in my house and not be able to get a straight answer," said John Hanratty, who was told to go inside of his house when he was smoking a cigarette on his front porch this morning.
"It makes me feel like I don't want to be around here I mean there's too much gong on," said James Szymanski, Elmira resident.
Some, like 1st street resident, Tosha teeter, say it "just gets worse and worse everyday."
She has four kids and says she's worried about letting them play outside because of the violence.
"Pretty much everyone [is worried] in my neighborhood we all have small children so we all feel the same way umm as far as myself and my family we're just gonna go and move," said Toshia Teeter.
Elmira fire department was on hand in case of an explosion. Authorities are on scene and are still investigating.
