Corning: Most Fun Small Town in US

CORNING (WENY) -- It's home to artists, runners, shoppers and anyone just looking for a good time. But now, it's not just locals recognizing Corning as a fun small town. The Crystal City is named the most fun small town in the entire country by Rand McNally for their "Best of the Road" contest.
"There's a lot of great places, but this is the most fun small town in America and there's such a variety of things for people to do," says Peggy Coleman, President of the Steuben County Conference and Visitors Bureau.
Corning beat out hundreds of small towns, giving lifelong residents a new appreciation for their home town.
"If you're gonna look at it for being fun, you got the brewing companies, the restaurants, a ton of great restaurants all over the place; it can actually be pretty fun if you're looking in the right spots," says Josh Degeyter.
And on top of bragging rights, Corning will be featured in next year's Rand McNally Atlas, on the website, the smart phone app and as a point of interest in Rand McNally RV and Good Sam GPS's.
"It means a lot because it gives more credibility. I think [it's different] for me as the tourism person saying 'oh you gotta come here,' but it's an outside source saying that," says Coleman.
She says the recognition will really help with economic impact to the area, specifically tourism.
Coleman says tourists spent over $45 Million in Steuben County in 2012, supporting about 2,175 full time employees and generating over $9 Million local taxes to Steuben County. As a result, everyone homeowner in the county saves close to $400 in property taxes.
Helen Nordoff and her daughter are here for a visit from Toronto. They say the four hour drive is worth it every time.
"Number one: the museum. Number two: it's a charming beautiful town. Music in the square; this is so pleasant," says Nordoff.
They also enjoy going to the antique shops and say this won't be their last stop.
