Voters Head to Poll For ECSD Budget
ELMIRA (WENY)---Voters head to the polls tomorrow to decide the fate of a revised Elmira School Budget.
The first budget -- which included a 5% property tax levy increase and more than a hundred teacher layoffs -- failed to reach a 60% super majority, as required by Governer Andrew Cuomo's property tax cap.
Now district leaders are falling back to Plan B -- a budget that includes more layoffs, but only raises the property tax 2.61%, right at Cuomo's legal ceiling.
The 114 million dollars budget only requires a 50%-plus-one majority.
Superintendent Joe Hochreiter hopes Elmira neighbors pass the budget Tesuday because Plan C -- the contingency budget -- will include even more cuts to programs and staff.
The budget vote will be on June 19th from 7:00am to 8:00pm. You can vote at either Elmira Free Academy or Southside High School.
