Elmira Animal Control
ELMIRA - [WENY] The Elmira City Council voted to share its animal control services with 5 other municipalities in Chemung County on Monday night.
Ashland, Catlin, the Town of Chemung, and the Town of Horseheads will now be serviced by Elmira Animal Control. The service expansion will be for calls only, and not for patrols.
The City of Elmira will generate roughly $38,000 in revenue from the new agreements alone, which are effective on May 1st. The city already has and will continue to provide animal control to the Town of Southport and the Town of Elmira.
Elmira Mayor Sue Skidmore said, "We're looking at the way it is right now, we can probably handle it with exactly the same amount of staff we have. If anything, and again it's May, so we are already half way through the year. So if anything, we may have to have an additional half time animal control officer, and an additional half time at the shelter."
Discussions for the service agreements started earlier this year, in advance of the end of the SPCA ending all of their service contracts on April 1st.
