Elmira, Ny (WENY)- Elmira City School district has made more cuts, this time effecting employees jobs.

     As of now the proposed budget is balanced but in turn some classroom and teaching positions are on the chopping block. Eliminating some classes and growing others means a total of 29 positions will be cut between elementary and secondary schools.

     Choosing French, as an elective will no longer be offered and reductions will be made across the board effecting positions from math to student counselors. Current proposed cuts allow for art, music, and phys ed to stay intact at the elementary level.

     Although the plan predicts a balanced budget, if the 4.6% tax levy is not approved it could mean even more cuts to next year.

 “You know where effecting peoples lives and that’s always difficult, our community has been very supportive of the difficult process we have faced for the last couple of years,” said Hillary Austin, Interim Deputy Superintendent.

     The good news is the board plans to add eight new schools buses to increase the safety of students, 90% of the costs of those buses will be reimbursed by the state.

     The final budget will be approved by the school board on April 10th - the public will vote on May 21st.
