Elmira Corning Airport Adds Flight to Chicago
September 9, 2013
HORSEHEADS -- (WENY) Elmira Corning Regional Airport will soon be getting a new flight to check into. United Airlines is launching a new nonstop service to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli and Airport Director Ann Crook, say it's something they've been working on for years.
"It really is huge growth for this little airport," said Ann Crook.
Santulli added, "there are 160 other places you can go to (from Chicago O'Hare). If you're in the business world and you're either here or you'd like to come here Chicago opens up a huge opportunity."
This would be the third major airline to come to the airport. And with that brings new business and new jobs to the area.
"On the short term, this is a great indication or illustration of just how aggressive we want to be as a community economically and on the long term, as these flights succeed and grow and expand, we'll have some long term benefits to enjoy as well," said Kevin Keeley, President of the Chemung County Chamber of Commerce.
Workers at the airport were excited when they heard the news.
Brittany Girardi, a server at DeClemente's Restaurant inside the airport said, "instantly I'm like cool we're flying to more places besides Philly and Detroit and then it really clicked, more flights more business."
"If you got more people that means more business and more revenue coming in," added Ervin Wicker, car detailer at Avis at the airport.
And travelers like Michael Pokorny now have a non stop way to get home.
"Oh a direct flight would be outstanding," said Michael Pokorny, Chicago native.
The non-stop daily United Express service will begin on February 13, 2014.
