Elmira Heights (WENY) - Elmira Heights Volunteer fire fighters will be a little bit safer this year thanks to a more than $100,000 of federal grant money. The money comes from FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The money will go towards purchasing new Personal Protective Clothing to replace outdated equipment. It costs 1,800 for every new coat and new pair of pants. OSHA mandates protective gear must be replaced every 10 years. In Elmira Heights 27 pieces of personal protective clothing will become outdated this year. Fire Chief James Locker says this grant will put the mind of his men at ease knowing they are well equipped.

“Our goal is that everybody goes home and the reality is when they leave here to go to an alarm they may not come back and our goal is to do everything in our power to make sure they do, and this is going to be one of those steps,” says Locker.

The Elmira Heights fire department has 54 volunteers and they protect about 10,000 people.
