FASD Awareness Day
ELMIRA---(WENY) Monday marks Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day, or as it's more commonly known, FASD.
To get the word out, Trinity of Chemung County is holding an educational Campaign. It serves as a reminder to women not to drink while they're pregnant. Trinity is sending out over a-thousand post-cards to doctors offices in the area.
Each one has information about the affects of FASD and how to keep your child safe. There is also a 'lifesaver' candy attached to each card to server as a reminder of the damage alcohol can do to an unborn child.
Sarah Mitrano, Community Prevention Specialist for Trinity of Chemung County says, " If you're pregnant, do not drink during any trimester of your pregnancy because your child could then have FASD. Some signs and symptoms of FASD are learning disabilities, behavioral problems, vision and hearing impairment and skeletal deformities."
Trinity wants people to know that FASD is 100% preventable. For more information on the disorder, call 607-737-5218.
