Fill the Bus Collects Nearly 55,000 Pounds of Food
ELMIRA HEIGHTS, NY (WENY) -- Your generosity at the grocery store checkout means local needy children will have healthy meals when they're not in school.
The Food Bank of the Southern Tier and Wegmans announced this year's "Fill the Bus" campaign collected nearly 55,000 pounds of food.
Throughout September, shoppers at Wegmans bought food to help fill the school bus parked outside the store. The donated food goes to the Food Bank's Backpack Program, which gives kids food to take home on weekends, when they might not otherwise have access to consistent meals.
"Right now, our backpack program is serving about 1,800 kids each week, and our goal is to expand that program to about 3,500 kids each week. And we could not expand the program without the generous support of our partners like Wegmans," explained Natasha Thompson, Food Bank of the Southern Tier's President and CEO.
The Food Bank plans to give out more than 68,000 packs of food to needy children in the Southern Tier during this school year.
