Giving Tuesday hits the Twin Tiers

TWIN TIERS (WENY) -- After we've sat around the table for Thanksgiving dinner, rushed out to stores for Black Friday shopping, and sat in front of our computers for Cyber Monday, now comes a day for others. It's called giving Tuesday and it's gaining popularity in the Twin Tiers.
It's a day for people to give back by donating time or money to charities or people who are less fortunate.
"It's really an opportunity for us to take a step back and remember that the holiday season isn't always about buying gifts and that sort of thing," said Kristin Butler, manager of marketing and communications, United Way of the Southern Tier. "It can be about helping others and you have a great chance to do that by supporting your favorite non-profit."
The United way is a locally managed non-profit that aims to fund health and human services and help people improve their lives.
Habitat for Humanity is joining in on the Giving Tuesday movement as well.
"When people donate to Habitat for Humanity that money stays in the community. We use it to build homes for people in need  for some place decent and affordable to live," said Jan Harvey, president, Southeastern Steuben County Habitat for Humanity.
And at the Habitat for Humanity Re Store, customers are opening their wallets for a greater cause. Habitat uses all proceeds from the shop to build homes for families in need.
"It's one of the things that makes the Twin Tiers special. That people, each in their way, give to the community their time their money. That's what makes life so special," said Judy Martinez, customer.
Many non-profits in the area, like CASA of the Southern Tier set up websites for people to donate.
"Not only will it bring more awareness to national giving day to our area, but it will also help our organization by helping abused neglected children through the holiday season so they can find a safe permanent and loving home," said Ashley Masteller, program assistant, CASA of the Southern Tier.
Non profits and people who gave today posted "Unselfie's" with the hashtag #GivingTuesday to call attention to the issue.
