Government Shutdown Effects On Local Farms
BALDWIN---(WENY) We are now on day four of the government shutdown, and the effects are trickling down.
Farmers could start feeling the effects soon. USDA inspectors are furloughed, and small, family farmers aren't getting any federal loans.
President of the Chemung County Farm Bureau, Ashur Terwilliger and other farmers who raise cattle are keeping a close eye on the situation.
Terwilliger weighs in saying, "The main effects to the USDA is to the meat industry. Without inspectors, how you gonna inspect the meat, which affects the meat plants, which affects people like me that raise beef. They're gonna have to straighten it out. Without agriculture, its gonna really affect the economy."
Prices on food could also go up if the shutdown lasts much longer. Some predict Milk prices could double if the shutdown drags on.
